StoryRamesh, A young and struggling lawyer, in Lucknow, takes up accomodation on the ground floor of a building, the first floor of which is occupied by Digambarnath and his young daughter Shanti. One day as Ramesh is rehearsing his defence for a court case he is disturbed by a brisk thumping sound from above, occasioned by Shanti's dancing. In retaliation and out of sheer mischief, Ramesh hits the ceiling with a bamboo. This brings down Shanti to Ramesh's house and both of them quarrel. Digambarnath in the meanwhile, comes on the scene and in disgust decides to vacate the house to get rid of Ramesh. Ramesh soon learns that Digambarnath has taken up another house and wants to sublet a portion of it to any old man. Ramesh who is by now head over heels in love with Shanti, disguises himself as Mirza, an old man. He is immediately liked by both father and daughter and they give him accomodation and also take good care of him. Perched on a tree, Ramesh once watches a debate of young college girls. The function is presided over by Dayal, a wealthy and elderly widower who is a renowned lawyer of the city. The subject of the debate was which is more essential to make marriage a succcess: Wealth or love ? Shanti speaks in favour of love, while her friend Chanchal speaks in favour of wealth. Shanti wins the prize and Ramesh feels elated at Shanti's observations. Often Ramesh hangs around Shanti teasing and annoying her The more he tries to please her the more furious she becomes. During the Holi festival, Shanti and her friends corner old Mirza and spray him all over with coloured water. In the course of the struggle his beard comes off and everybody gets shocked to see the real identity of old Mirza. Digambarnath who witnesses this tries to beat up the young man with a stick, but in that attempt, with a sudden attack of blood pressure, collapses on the ground. Ramesh helps him to bed and nurses him back to health. Digambarnath's son-in-law, Prakash, a rogue and a drunkard comes to Lucknow with his wife and starts harassing the family. Chanchal, who got married to Dayal, comes one day to see Shanti in order to boast of her happiness and wealth. She meets Ramesh in the house and at once a spark of love kindles her heart. Digambarnath who has been ailing since the entry of Prakash in the house, soon dies and Prakash gets a free hand to indulge in drinks at the expense of Shanti. Chanchal, who is attracted more and more towards Ramesh suggests Shanti to take up a Job for meeting her expenses so that with Shanti away from the scene, she can see more of Ramesh. She also persuades him to accept a job as her husband's secretary. Wily Prakash easily discovers Chanchal's infatuation for Ramesh and promises to help her in the matter for money. Prakash evolves a plan by which Shanti would start hating Ramesh. Accordingly Chanchal invites Ramesh to a hotel where Prakash mixes alcohol with drinks and Ramesh becomes drunk and creates a scene. Shanti who happens to be around gets disgusted and leaves the place. Chanchal utilises the opportunity to take him to her house. As they enter the house Dayal notices their intimate behaviour and his growing suspicions get confirmed. He straightaway draws his will disinheriting his wife of all his wealth. Prakash who learns about this, plans with Chanchal to do away with Dayal. Dayal takes Chanchal by the side of a river and denounces her of infidelity and openly accuses her of having Intimate relations with Ramesh. He also informs her of his will. While Dayal and Chanchal were crossing the river on their return journey, Prakash manages to get Dayal drowned and very cleverly lays his hands on the will and with that manages to blackmail Chanchal for more and more money. Fed up with his pestering, one day she refuses to pay and while he is about to strangle her, Shanti comes in. Prakash sees her and is afraid that she might have overheard his talk with Chanchal and tries to shoot her. She runs for her life followed by Prakash. She takes shelter in a room nearby where Prakash follows her, but he slips and Shanti manages to grasp the revolver. Shanti then threatens to shoot him if he advances. While Prakash tries to argue, with her, a shot is fired and Prakash drops down dead. Hearing the sound, a policeman reaches there and seeing Shanti with a revolver, and a dead body beside her, thinks that she had murdered Prakash and arrests her. She pleads her innocence. Is Shanti really innocent ? Then who is the real murderer? You will be stunned when you know the truth which is most dramatically revealed on the screen.
