| Story | Synopsis I The story of a whore house in a remote town which becomes the bone of contention between political and business interests. Synopsis II Apparently inspired by The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas director Shyam Benegal's only venture into comedy touches on religion and politics via the motif of prostitution. Brothel madam Rukmini (Shabana Azmi) tries to make her bunch of ebullient 'girls' conform to the time-honored traditions of the Kotha (a brothel where music and dance flourish). But the women's mischievousness soon forces the establishment to find another home. Problems arise when Sushil, (Aditya Bhattacharya) the son of Major Agarwal (Saeed Jaffrey), a local notable, falls in love with the prostitute Zeenat (Smita Patil). Now Zeenat happens to be Agarwal's illegitimate daughter! Mr Gupta (Kulbhushan Kharbanda), a property developer who wants Sushil to become his own son-in-law, makes the brothel shift locations yet again in order to separate Sushil from Zeenat. This rollicking comedy, filled with bawdy jokes and great performances from the all-star cast, also features Om Puri, Naseeruddin Shah and Kulbhushan Kharbanda. |
